The Kogi State government has said it repealed the Ground Rent and Tenement Rate laws for effective tax administration. It said the decision was in the best interest of taxpayers in the state, who have been burdened by cases of multiple taxation.

Executive Chairman of Kogi State Internal Revenue Service, Sule Salihu Enehe, explained at the statewide sensitisation tour in Anyigba on the Implementation of the Land Use Charge law.

Represented by the Director of Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs), Hajia Hassana Salawu, the executive chairman said the new charge seeks to unburden the encumbrance surrounding multiple taxation.

He explained that the Land Use Charge gives room for accurate assessment of property value for taxation purposes, Identification and registration of property in the state, allocation of land for government projects and social amenities, employment opportunities for enumerators from the district, and creation of a reliable database on the property makeup of the state to inform decision-making.

Enehe noted that under the new regime, the tax obligation section of the charge focuses mainly on property for lease and commercial purposes. The sensitisation tour, which commenced on July 1, aims to educate stakeholders on the Land Use Charge law and promote compliance with the enumeration process.

The Ogohi Onu Anyigba, Alhaji Abu Shaibu Okolo, lauded the exercise and promised to reach his subjects with the message.
