Nintendo Studios LLC and Universal Pictures have jointly filed a copyright claim recorded back in early June (and executed back in early May) for Untitled Donkey Kong Project; Motion picture.
The filing, first found by, appears to indicate the pair are pursuing a feature-length Donkey Kong film. The listing doesnt include any casting details or any creative personnel involved.
Studios do copyright listings for films all the time, many of which get stuck in development so this doesnt guarantee that a film will make it into production.
Seth Rogen voiced the character in a supporting capacity in 2023s The Super Mario Bros. Movie and could potentially be back in the part in the upcoming sequel due out next year.
Whether that will tease this new spin-off is unclear. It would mark the fourth film in Nintendos efforts to adapt its properties to the screen following the two Mario movies and the live-action Legend of Zelda adaptation arriving in 2027.
Not including Pokemon which is its own separate thing, Mario, Zelda and Donkey Kong are Nintendos three biggest franchises followed by Animal Crossing, Super Smash Bros titles and Kirby.
