Donald Trump quickly left the G7 summit in Canada and headed back to Washington, D.C., summoning his national security team to meet him in the White House Situation Room. While some speculated he was rushing back to help manage a ceasefire between Israel and Iran, Trump denied that and claimed the reason was much bigger. He told reporters that he needed to be in the Situation Room to properly monitor the situation in the Middle East, especially the growing conflict between Israel and Iran, which had escalated violently in the past week. Israel launched heavy airstrikes on Iran, claiming it needed to prevent Iran from developing nuclear weapons. In response, Iran fired hundreds of missiles and drones back at Israel. The death toll from the violence has been devastating. At least 224 people in Iran have died from the airstrikes, while 24 Israelis have been killed, and over 500 more wounded.Trump took to his social media platform, Truth Social, to warn Iran and the world. He posted that Iran CANNOT HAVE A NUCLEAR WEAPON and urged people to evacuate Tehran. He also slammed French President Emmanuel Macron for suggesting his trip home was about a ceasefire, saying Macron was completely wrong and often is.Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth joined Trump in the Situation Room and emphasized on Fox News that the U.S. military was in a defensive posture not actively participating in Israels strikes but prepared to protect American personnel and interests.Meanwhile, Trumps dramatic comments stirred strong reactions. The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), a prominent civil rights group, accused him of fear-mongering and misleading the public. They pointed out that U.S. intelligence has not found Iran pursuing nuclear weapons and criticized Trump for provoking war by supporting Israels attacks. As fighting between Israel and Iran continues despite international calls for peace, Trump has been vague about whether the U.S. might become directly involved. When asked if he would send troops or take military action, he simply said, I dont want to talk about that.
The G7 leaders released a joint statement urging peace and calling for Iran to never be allowed to develop a nuclear weapon. But on the ground, the violence shows no sign of slowing down, and Trumps rhetoric and actions suggest the U.S. is preparing for more instability.
